Abstract

This study aims to analyze the film Voice of Silence through the lens of Primo Levi's concept of the “gray zone,” in order to shed light on the ambiguity of human nature and the complexities of complicity for survival in extreme situations where the dichotomy of good and evil collapses. The film presents a narrative in which Tae-in and Chang-bok, who endure the brutal routine of handling corpses for a criminal organization, become entangled in a kidnapping case, blurring the boundaries between good and evil, perpetrator and victim. Accordingly, this study adopts Primo Levi's gray zone as its theoretical framework to examine the interactions between characters and space within the film, and to critically explore human figures who navigate between collaboration, complicity, and resistance under oppressive structures. In particular, by comparing the characters of Tae-in and Chang-bok with the figures of the Sonderkommando and Muselmann, the research highlights how human identity is deformed and dismantled in such contexts. Through this analysis, the study critically reflects on the extent and limitations of moral judgment and ethical responsibility within violent systems. Furthermore, by connecting these reflections to the oppressive structures of contemporary society, this research seeks to reexamine the ethical challenges we face today and contribute academically by continuously raising questions about humanity and morality.
