Abstract

This study examined the level and the effects of emotional labor in police organizations. Emotional labor was defined, in accordance with Glomb & Tews(2004), as the expression of emotions and non-expression of emotions, which may or may not be felt, in accordance with display rules. Based on prior researches, emotional labor was hypothesized to have negative consequences for occupational stress of employees and organizational identification to be the potential moderator of the relationships between the dimensions of emotional labor and occupational stress. Emotional labor was measured using Glomb & Tews(2004) measure of DEELS(Discrete Emotions Labor Scale), occupational stress using 4-item Morash et al.(2006) measure of stress, and organizational identification using 6-item Mael & Ashforth(1992) measure of OID. Statistical analysis was implemented with 791 questionnaires out of 900. The results are as follow. First, service encounters working in the Crime Prevention Division show higher level of emotional labor, but street level personnel from the rank of Policeman to Assistant Inspector fail to express statistically significant higher level of emotional labor. Second, policewomen expressed more positive emotions and suppressed more negative emotions than their male partners. Lastly, most dimensions of emotional labor influences positively police officials' level of occupational stress. But, the moderating effect of organizational identification on the relationship between emotional labor and occupational stress isn't proved. The conclusion discusses some implications and limitations of this study and some issues that should be considered in the future.
