그간 국내에서 경찰 신뢰에 미치는 영향 요인을 탐색하는 연구는 꾸준히 진행되었으나, 경찰 신뢰에 이르는 경로에 관한 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 이러한 연구의 공백을 메우기 위해 이 연구는 전국범죄피해조사 2018 자료를 사용하여 범죄피해 두려움이 범죄피해 경험과 경찰 신뢰 사이의 관계를 매개하는지 검증하였다. 분석 결과, 범죄피해 두려움은 범죄피해 경험과 경찰 신뢰 사이의 관계를 매개하는 것으로 나타났다. 특히, 직접피해 경험의 경우, 경찰 신뢰에 미치는 직접효과는 유의미하지 않았으나 범죄피해 두려움을 증가시킴으로써 경찰 신뢰에 부정적인 영향력을 미치는 간접효과는 유의미한 것으로 나타났다. 간접피해 경험은 경찰 신뢰에 직접적으로 경찰 신뢰에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라 범죄피해 두려움을 증가시킴으로써 경찰 신뢰를 낮추는 간접적인 영향력 또한 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석 결과는 경찰 신뢰 영향 요인들 간의 세밀한 분석이 필요하다는 것을 보여주며, 경찰 신뢰를 높이기 위해 지역사회 내 범죄 문제를 해결하려는 노력과 더불어 범죄 두려움을 감소시키는 노력이 병행되어야 함을 시사한다.
Abstract
Prior investigations have examined factors shaping confidence in the police; however, less is known about the specific paths to confidence in the police. To fill this gap, using data from the 2018 Korean Crime Victimization Survey, the current study investigates whether fear of crime mediates the effects of criminal victimization on confidence in the police. The results indicated that the relationship between victimization and confidence in the police was mediated by fear of crime. While direct victimization did not directly influence trust in the police, its indirect impact through fear of crime was significant. Also, indirect victimization has a negative impact on confidence in the police, and fear of crime significantly mediates the relationship between indirect victimization and trust in police. The findings indicate that the research on paths to confidence in the police is critical for offering additional insights and the police should attempt not only to deal with crime problems in their jurisdictions but also to dampen down fear of crime and correct inaccurate beliefs about crime to improve confidence in the police.
