Abstract
This study constructs the Maritime Supply Chain Risk Sentiment Index (CTRS: MSCR, PSCR, SSCR) by applying GPT-based sentiment analysis to monthly news articles from domestic shipping and port journals covering 2002–2024, and examines its impact on container throughput at Busan Port using an SVAR model. The analysis shows that PSCR (port) significantly affects imports, SSCR (shipping) impacts exports, and MSCR (maritime) influences both imports and exports, while the effect on transshipment volumes is limited. These findings indicate that the influence on container throughput varies by maritime supply chain risk type and cargo handling mode, underscoring the need for differentiated dual-track strategies in port operations and shipping policy design. Furthermore, this research is the first in the port studies field to quantify unstructured news data through generative AI to build a maritime supply chain risk index, providing a methodological foundation for early warning systems and the advancement of short-term policy responses.
