Abstract
This study aims to develop a domain-tuned analytical framework that integrates sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and quantitative forecasting to enable early detection of quality-related risks (CTQ) in the shipping market. Using weekly maritime reports published by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI), the research expands the Loughran-McDonald financial sentiment dictionary with shipping- specific terminology to construct a domain-specialized sentiment lexicon. The relationship between sentiment and topics was quantified through a combination of centrality and PMI weights, while six key shipping quality factors-freight rate stability, schedule reliability, lead time, vessel utilization, equipment availability, and eco-efficiency-were used to derive corresponding CTQScores. The resulting scores were evaluated using ElasticNet and VAR models to examine their co-movement and lead–lag relationships with KPI such as SCFI. Empirical findings indicate that the CTQScores effectively capture early signs of market instability, achieving moderate predictive accuracy(R² ≈ 0.68, hit ratio ≈ 0.74). These results highlight the potential of domain-tuned NLP techniques in transforming qualitative insights into quantitative indicators for the early identification of quality risks in the global shipping industry.
