Abstract

The world is facing increasing instability in global supply chains due to climate change, political and religious conflicts, wars, and rising national protectionism. These supply chain risks are affecting previously stable transportation routes, and it has become important to predict changes. In this study, we analyzed how the intermodal transportation routes between Korea and North America would change in the event of major supply chain risks such as port strikes and the Panama Canal shutdown, and used the Beresford model, which is widely used in intermodal transportation design. For the analysis, we set up four logistics bases in the western and eastern U.S., Canada, and Mexico, and evaluated scenarios that comprehensively considered transportation distance, time, and cost. As a result, it was analyzed that shifting from the existing port-centered intermodal routes in the western U.S. to overland intermodal routes via Mexico is an effective way to flexibly replace supply chain risks.
