Abstract

This study assumes that the main raw data used in the calculation of the liner shipping connectivity index are internal and external economic security risk factors, and estimates the impact of changes in these factors, i.e. the reconfiguration of national maritime supply chains, on global seaborne trade. In addition, we examine the effects of maritime supply chain reconfiguration in nine major countries located at choke points along selected seaborne trade routes. The results of the analysis show that changes in the main components of maritime supply chain reconfiguration, which constitute shipping connectivity, resulted in an increase in multilateral seaborne trade among 148 countries. On the other hand, the impact of strengthening maritime supply chains with certain groups, such as nine major countries with economic security concerns and the United States or China's Belt and Road Partnership countries, on increasing the level of global seaborne trade was insignificant. The results of this study suggest the need for countries with high external dependence on maritime trade, such as South Korea, to systematically and selectively establish strategies to respond to the reconfiguration of maritime supply chains.
