Abstract
In the cosmetics industry, advancements in liquid crystal (LC) technology have progressed alongside surfactant-based emulsification, leading to a variety of formulations with enhanced functional performance. The skin-like multilamellar structure of liquid crystals promotes penetration into the stratum corneum, improving skin hydration. When incorporated into cosmetic formulations, LC structures mimic the lipid layers of the skin barrier, reinforcing moisture retention and providing long-lasting moisturization. Glycocare-HA, a naturally derived LC emulsifier, consists of saturated lecithin, behenyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, and stearic acid. This study focused on the preparation and evaluation of Glycocare-HA for its ability to form LC structures and maintain formulation stability. The LC phases in emulsions containing Glycocare-HA were examined using polarized light microscopy (PLM). Rheological analysis assessed the viscoelastic behavior of the emulsions, while Turbiscan analysis evaluated their dispersion stability. Additionally, physical stability was monitored over three months under varying temperature conditions through visual observations and instrumental analyses. Results showed that liquid crystal emulsions with Glycocare-HA maintained a well-defined and stable LC structure throughout the three-month storage period. LC formation was also confirmed in other formulations, such as lotions, highlighting Glycocare-HA's versatility across different cosmetic systems. These findings suggest that Glycocare-HA enhances the stability and moisturizing effectiveness of LC-based emulsions, positioning it as a next-generation cosmetic emulsifier that offers improved performance without the need for additional stabilizers or processing steps.
