Abstract
Mental simulation has been studied in various ways in marketing. However, many studies indicated that the process-focused thoughts were more effective than the outcome-focused thoughts. Thus, the current research examined the effect of mental simulation on product evaluation by using social power as a moderator. Specifically, this research investigated the role of social power in the effect of outcome-focused messages vs. process-focused messages on product evaluation. As a result, in the high-power condition, participants with outcome-focused messages evaluated the product more favorably than those with process-focused messages. By contrast, in the low-power condition, no difference was found. In addition, in the high-power condition, participants with outcome-focused messages showed higher purchase intentions than those with process-focused messages. By contrast, in the low-power condition, no difference was found. Thus, outcome-focused messages were more effective than process-focused messages in the high-power condition.
