Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the secondary pre-service teachers’ choice of participation mode and learning experience in a hybrid class. Method: The participants of this study were students in pre-service teacher education for secondary school. After 4 week hybrid classes, 19 students were surveyed and three students in individual interview were performed. The individual interviewees were each from the three groups of participation mode; the face-to-face, the online, and the mixed one. To analyze data, crossover analysis for survey and content analysis for the interview were performed. Results: 1) It was statistically significant that preference of participation mode affected to actual participation in a hybrid class. Participants preferred face-to-face to online class because they were able to concentrate better on the lesson. Those who chose online were more concerned with convenience over efficiency. In addition, sense of belonging and perception of equal participation were not statistically significant according to the participation modes. 2) Most student regarded that the hybrid class’ strongest point was the flexibility of giving the students the freedom to choose the preferred method of class attendance and participation. Student felt that more technological improvement should be made to better suit hybrid class sessions to be in sync with in-class sessions. 3) The hybrid class experience enabled them to imagine the possible future classes and teachers’ role in the new environments. Discussion and Conclusion: Based on the results, we discussed that 1) Hybrid class moved to the student-centered instruction providing them a wider choice of class participation. 2) Instructional design and creating the classroom climate to better suit hybrid classroom are required. 3) The more improvement and support in undergraduate academic structure, technology, and classroom environments should be made for hybrid class. 4) The more opportunities to experience the new learning methods should be offered in the teacher education curriculum to develop their ability to response to the change. The limitations of this study and suggestions for further research were addressed. As a new norm for changes in educational environments, Hybrid classes need to be considered as a strong candidate as the future of educational method.
