Abstract
Religion has become an increasingly common element in global politics. Furthermore, most world religions in nature are transnational and create common bonds between people of differing global regions which can transcend their own national loyalty and interest. This transnational religious identity engenders a sense of moral responsibility among religious communities. The capacity of shared transnational faith-based identity serves as a religious asset for mobilizing social movements as well as withholding the traditional antagonisms between Protestants, Catholics, and Buddhists. Yet, the role of religion in international affairs was all but ignored previously. Now, people around the world witness the collapse of democracy in Myanmar: a military coup and large-scale human rights violations. South Koreans who suffered under similar circumstances commiserate with Myanmar protesters. Currently, Korean religious communities such as the Catholic Bishop’s Council, the National Council of Churches, and the Jogye Order of Buddhism have expressed concerns about political instability in Myanmar and declared solidarity with the pro-democracy movement there. This article provides a substantive study of the socially engaged religions in Korea, analyzing and critically comparing the social teachings of Buddhism, Catholic, and Protestant Church. By evaluating the extent of their engagement in dealing with the crisis of Myanmar’s democracy, the importance of religious values in the disciplines of social movement is stressed. Moreover, this article outlines a new, religiously sensitive approach to humanitarian intervention of rogue countries that renounce their responsibility to protect the people in national crises and inhumane tragedy. The case can be made that the social activism of Korea’s major religions offers important resources for conceptualizing faith-based humanitarian intervention in global politics. This research paper will analyze the historical and contemporary roles of religious beliefs and organizations with respect to democratization, popular sovereignty, and humanitarian intervention.
