퇴계의 『대학』해석의 특징 - 율곡 『대학언해』와 교정청본 『대학언해』와의 비교를 중심으로

Abstract

This study analyzed texts about The Great Learning from the Commentary on the Great Learning; studied Toegyejip, based on the findings of previous studies; and examined the characteristics of Toegye’s understanding of The Great Learning. To emphasize Toegye’s unique characteristics, this study analyzed the Commentary on the Great Learning and compared it with Yulgok and the edited Gyojeongcheong version of the Korean Annotation of the Great Learning. It also analyzed the explanations of The Great Learning in Toegyejip and compared them with the explanations in The Complete Works of Yulgok. Toegye’s Commentary on the Great Learning consists of 102 items of commentary. Out of these, 101 items regard the original text of The Great Learning, while only 1 addresses Zhu Xi’s annotations in the Interpretation of the Great Learning. Out of 101 items, 56 provided only 1 Korean annotation and did not mention whether it was correct or incorrect; 17 provided 2 annotations and did not mention whether they were correct or incorrect; and only 28 discussed the correct or incorrect nature of the annotations. Two points summarize the characteristics of Toegye’s interpretation of The Great Learning, and become evident when the latter is compared with both Yukgol and the edited Gyojeongcheong version. First, the annotation of The Great Learning is focused on making the flow as natural as possible when translated into Korean sentences. Second, Toegye tends to take an extremely prudent attitude when interpreting the scriptures.
