Abstract

Na Hye-seok was the first female Western painter to live in colonial Joseon, a female novelist representing the 1920s, and a practical women’s liberationist based on her life and experience. However, even though Na’s life and art have made remarkable achievements in art and literature, the secular controversy surrounding her divorce has almost buried her in the personal history of a woman who lived under colonial rule. Also, the logic and practice of women’s liberation against the power-building of feudal male-centered society also had to undergo serious distortion, which degenerated into the secular gossip of deviance and infidelity of new women. It is true that Na’s life, art and literature were completely shunned by his family and society as a whole. Na Hye-sok also the theory of the emancipation of women is discussed in the Andong in accordance with the times and according to the side as a discussion of the relevance of political activity is relatively scarce. Na spent six years from 1921 to 1927, most of her marriage in Andong, China. Her husband’s status as deputy consul at the consulate in Andong allowed her to lead the most leisurely and stable life, economically and socially, and freely traversed the Manchurian region of Bongcheon, family, currency, Changchun and Harbin as her stronghold in the border city of Andong, focusing on creating literature and art based on the fundamental foundation of modern women’s consciousness. Of course, in that these artistic creation activities had a marked purpose in protecting and enhancing women’s rights and interests, such as the establishment of women’s night studies, organizing girlfriends’ clubs and activities, a focused problem awareness is required to evaluate Na’s literature and art in the extension of the women’s movement. It should also be noted that since he was in the border city as a gateway to and from Joseon and China during the colonial period, he actively supported secret activities of patriots who campaigned for independence or helped their safety. The practice of the independence movement was based on the national consciousness formed during the period from studying in Japan to the March 1st Movement, and must have contributed to the independence movement of the post-war Joseon Dynasty in 1920, including the activities of the protocol corps, such as the “Hwangok Incident,” and the role of the temporary transportation bureau installed by the Shanghai Provisional Government in Andong in a certain part. In the history of the colonial period, in that Andong of China is an area of great significance in terms of Korean immigrants and independence fighters, understanding Na Hye-seok, then the wife of the deputy consul of the Japanese consulate in Andong, can't help but be a meaningful approach. It should not be overlooked that the placeliness of Andong is a very large part of Na’s life and art, especially when it was noted that Andong practiced various activities to increase her passport while making more acrimonious criticism of the reality of unreasonable women stemming from the system of marriage. Based on this fact, the Dong-A Ilbo focused on this fact and examined Na’s Andong days in relation to the independence movement, and empirically discussed the practical movements and artistic activities formed at the point where this national consciousness meets women’s liberation. It also took note of the female subject’s representations reflected in Na Hye-seok’s writings and paintings during the Andong period, and took a problematic look at the establishment of a self-directed female consciousness that was more clearly formed through criticism of the absurdity of the marriage system and the experience of traveling to the U.S. It has become such a class of the theory of the emancipation of women as Na Hye-sok overwhelmed by the appearance of the nationalists as a bold as somewhat of a marginalize criticism of the colony, at the same time. Modern Western experience as the modern woman who lived at the Andong as a beachhead that made possible the place of conscious trouble to find special meaning.
