Abstract

Noting that previous studies very much neglected Kim Heung-rak, a representative figure in the Yeongnam area in the 19th century, this study examined his literary works and sought to find out his literary recognition and the overview of his creation. Kim Heung-rak was very proud to inherit the legitimate legacy of Toegye Doctrines. He thus put more efforts in maintaining and practicing the established theories than the development of new theories. His literary perception was on the extension of this academic tendency. He succeeded to the theory of regarding the way more essential than literature(道本文末論), dismissed the writings that pursued the beauty of form and expression, and pursued scholarly writing faithful to contents and integrity. His creation of Chinese poetry was also based on this academic tendency and literary recognition. As he inherited the Doctrines of Toegye-which were acknowledged widely academically-he preferred literary styles with clear representation even in Chinese poems such as with five words and seven words. Just as he rejected the new doctrines and respected the right theories, he totally dismissed the creation of new and miscellaneous poems. These literary perceptions were also reflected in subject matter and contents. He created a lot of memorial poems in order to practice Confucian ethics, and he enjoyed creating works that honored the learning attitudes of ancient sages, and their loyalty ad filial piety. He wrote a lot of works that expressed his self-examination on his study and his determination to live his life with integrity. This is a part of his pursuit for scholarly writing. Kim Heung-rak's literary recognition and creative style seemed to have had a great impact on the creative activities of later intellectuals in the Yeongnam region as his academic influence was enormous, but more specific contents should be further studied.
