본 논문은 조덕린趙德鄰의 초고본草稿本 ｢역경의의易經疑義｣에 대해서 살펴본 글이다. 조덕린의 ｢역경의의｣는 『주역전의대전周易傳義⼤全』을 바탕으로 하여 소주小註를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이는 주자학朱子學을 심화·발전시켰다는 긍정적인 측면도 있지만, 30여 명이나 되는 학자들의 글이므로 산만한 글이 될 수 있다는 부정적인 측면을 동시에 가지고 있다. 영조英祖 1년(1725) 이현일李⽞逸은 관직까지 추탈抽脫되었고, 조덕린은 사간원사간司諫院司諫을 사직하면서 ｢을사십조소⼄巳⼗條疏｣를 올린다. 그러나 이때 올린 ｢을사십조소｣는 결국 조덕린을 죽음으로 몰고 가는 계기로 작용한다. 필자는 초고본 ｢역경의의｣가 추후 어떻게 발전될 수 있을까 하는 가능성을 3가지 관점에서 논하였다. 첫째, 초고본 ｢역경의의｣는 이황李滉의 『계몽전의啓蒙傳疑』와 같이 『역학계몽易學啟蒙』을 해설하는 서적으로 발전될 수 있는 가능성이다. 둘째, 이현일의 『홍범연의洪範衍義』와 같이 홍범학洪範學으로 발전될 수 있는 가능성이다. 셋째, 조덕린과 비슷한 연배이고 같은 영남남인이었던 이주천李柱天과 같이 『단시점斷時占』과 같은 새로운 점법占法을 제시했을 가능성이다. 이 가운데 필자는 2번째 관점이 가장 유력하다고 생각한다. 조덕린은 유배지에서 70이 가까운 나이에 『주역』에 침잠하였고, ｢역경의의｣ 라는 초고본을 완성하였다. 그렇다면 이 초고본은 무엇을 하기 위한 것일까? 필자는 아마도 유배지가 같았던 이현일과 관계가 있었을 것이라고 생각한다.
Abstract
This paper examines Jo Deok-Rin(趙德鄰)’s draft “Yeoggyeonguiui (｢易經疑義｣)”. Jo Deok-rin’s “Yeoggyeonguiui” is based on the Juyeogjeonuidaejeon(周易傳義大全) is analyzed mainly through the small notes. This has a positive aspect in that it deepens and develops Jujahag(朱⼦學), but it also has a negative aspect in that it can be a scattered piece of writing as it is written by over 30 scholars. In the first year of King Yeongjo(英祖)’s reign, Yi Hyeon-Il(李玄逸) was stripped of his official position, and Jo Deok-Rin resigned from his position and submitted the “Eulsasipjoso(｢乙巳⼗條疏｣)”. However, the “Eulsasippjoso” submitted at this time ultimately became the trigger that drove Jo Deok-Rin to death. The author discussed three possible developments of the draft of “Yeokgyeonguiui” from three perspectives. First, there is the possibility that the draft of “Yeokgyeonguiui” could develop into a book that explains Yeokhakgyeomong(易學啟蒙), like Yi Hwang(李滉)’s Gyeomongjeonui(啓蒙傳疑). Second, it can develop into Hongbeomhak(洪範學) like Yi Hyeon-Il’s Hongbeomyeonui(洪範衍義). Third, there is the possibility that he proposed a new divination method like Danshijeom(斷 時占), like Yi Ju-Cheon(李柱天), who was around the same age as Jo Deok-Rin and was also a member of the Yeongnam Namin(嶺南南人). Of these, the author believes the second perspective is the most plausible. When he was nearing 70, Jo Deok-Rin immersed himself in Juyeog (『周易』) and completed a draft of Juyeog titled “Yeoggyeonguiui”. But what was this draft's purpose? I think the author may have had a relationship with Yi Hyeon-Il, who was in the same place of exile.
