Abstract
This study utilized the 2018 consumer empowerment index data from the Korea Consumer Agency to investigate the effects of overconfidence on financial attitudes and behaviors governing the financial capability index. Financial competency was specifically selected and analyzed to explore the effects of fiscal overconfidence, which was operationally defined as the difference between objective financial acumen and subjective financial literacy. The findings indicated that among financial attitudes, only the loan-related attitude evinced significant differences between the overconfident and non-overconfident groups. Further, overconfidence levels were positively related to preferred financial behaviors. These results reflected that overconfidence could exert positive and negative impacts depending on individual financial behaviors. Moreover, financial experience could serve as an objective component of financial literacy for measuring overconfidence.
