Abstract
This study aims to analyze empirically objective and subjective financial literacy and probe identity of significant coefficients between a self-assessed subjective measure of financial literacy and objective one. The data for empirical testing was obtained from a survey for Korean university students. The empirical result shows that each of them has totally different structure of significant variables. That is, the statistically significant variables at the objective measure are not consistent with those of the self-assessed subjective measure. Thus, they are not substitutable for each other for measuring university student’s financial literacy. The significant variables at the estimation of objective financial literacy are as follows: how close to economics a respondent’s major is, economics education career at high school and university, schooling of a family head, a respondent’s financial experience, and educational environment for financial education at home. Those variables have a trait of environmental or experiential ones. On the other hand, the significant variables at the estimation of self-assessed subjective financial literacy have a trait that those are likely to make influence on a respondent’s subjective perception. For example, education career of attending a class of economics at high school years did not strongly and significantly explain objective financial literacy but strongly and significantly did explain subjective one. Namely, education career of economics at high school may make a respondent feel confident that I studied economics at high school and I am now good at economics and finance.
