Abstract

Ci (詞), which is a verse poem accompanied by music that flourished in the Song dynasty and was introduced to Goryeo, which had diplomatic relations with Song, and became a genre of Classical Korean Literature. While Classical Chinese verse has a fixed form, composed of five or seven words each line, Ci has a highly complicated form: each tone has a fixed frame; each phrase has a fixed number of words, each letter has its own pitch. Nevertheless, the writers of the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties did not neglect to write Ci, and about 3,000 works have been found to date. Not only that, but they also imitated the Novels of the Ming Dynasty that incorporated Ci into their works, resulting in the stylistic blending of Ci in Korean Chinese novels. The nine volumes of The Complete Collection of Korean Chinese novels (韓國漢文小說全集), compiled by the Chinese scholar Lin Mingde, contain 369 novels, of which Ci was used in works such as Xin Guanghan's “Anbingmongyurok (安憑夢遊錄),” Kim Siseup’s “Yonggungbuyeonnok (龍宮赴宴錄),” Tangong’s “Okseonmong (玉仙夢),” Kim Siseup’s “Leesengkujanjun (李生窺墻傳),” “Manboksajepogi (萬福寺樗蒲記),” Anonymous’ “Yeongyeongjeon (英英傳),” Gwon Pil’s “Jusaengjeon (周生傳),” Sushan's “Gwanghanrugi (廣寒樓記)” and Li Jongkun's “Manganghong (滿江紅).” It is highly praiseworthy that Lin Mingde, a Chinese, collected and organized Korean novels, but unfortunately, because he was unfamiliar with the stylistic rules of the Ci, there are many errors in the reading due to the punctuating, so that if a translation into Korean is made using this book as the basis, there will be many mistranslations. Therefore, this study points this out and corrects the problems of the Ci in The Complete Collection of Korean Chinese novels (韓國漢文小說全集).
