Abstract

This study aims to establish a direction for the modernization project of classical Korean literature and develop systematic translation and preservation strategies. In Chapter I, the study investigates the bibliography of classical Korean literature that should be included in the modernization project. To date, classical Korean documents have received relatively less attention than their classical Chinese counterparts, and systematic research has been insufficient. This study estimates the total volume of classical Korean documents to be approximately 440,000 and examines the classification and translation status of materials held by major libraries and research institutions. The findings reveal that 54% of classical Korean documents remain untranslated, with certain genres experiencing little to no translation efforts. Additionally, some previously translated works require retranslation due to errors, changes in readership, or aging of the translations. As a result, this study emphasizes the urgency of conducting a comprehensive survey, systematically organizing these texts, establishing a digital database, and developing an integrated platform. Based on these findings, a recommended list of texts for translation has been proposed. In Chapter Ⅱ, a standardization plan for the modernization of classical Korean literature has been developed. An analysis of classical Korean translation publications over the past 20 years indicates a heavy concentration of translation efforts in specific fields. Consequently, this study suggests that new translation approaches should be explored for genres that have already been extensively translated, while public institutions should take the lead in translating underrepresented genres. Furthermore, to ensure that the translated classical Korean texts are effectively accessible to the general public, this study proposes a plan for the development of a comprehensive classical Korean literature database. Finally, to systematically conduct research, translation, and database development of classical Korean literature, specialized institutions with extensive experience in classical translation, such as the Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics, should take on a leading role. Additionally, the establishment of educational programs to train experts in classical Korean translation is essential. This study reaffirms the value and significance of classical Korean literature and highlights the need for ongoing research and translation projects.
