Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct the itinerary of the autumn inspection tour (秋巡) undertaken by Seungsan (勝山) Kim Yeong-geun (金泳根, 1793–1873), who served as provincial governor(觀察使) of Gangwon (江原) from April 1863 to February 1864, combining official inspection tour (巡歷) with sightseeing at Mt. Geumgang (金剛山) and across the Gwandong (關東) region. Earlier research, drawing on Kim’s vernacular travelogue ‘Geumgangsan Jeolgi Dongyurok,’ clarified parts of the journey but left gaps owing to its literary form. By contrast, his third son Kim Byeong-ryeo (金炳驪, 1829~1883) who accompanied his father from start to finish, left a detailed record titled Pungag-ilgi (『楓嶽日記』), so a systematic comparison is possible. Reading Pungak-ilgi against the travelogue, this article traces routes and particulars of the governor’s inspection and sightseeing. Departing from the Gangwon Provincial Office (江原監營) in Wonju (原州), the inspect tour party traveled north through Hoengseong (橫城), Hongcheon (洪川), Chuncheon (春川), Nangcheon (狼川), and Geumseong (金城), and lodged at Changdo (昌道) Station, then passed Tonggu (通口), crossed Danballyeong (斷髮嶺), and began with the Inner Geumgang based from Jangansa (長安寺). The Inner circuit travel proceeded along the standard sequence - Jangansa (長安寺), Pyohunsa (表訓寺), Jeongyangsa (正陽寺), Mahayeon (摩訶𧗠), and Naesujae (內水梓) - then continued to the Outer circuit via Yujeomsa (榆岾寺), the Baekcheon Bridge (百川橋), Yangjin (養津) Station, and Singyesa (神溪寺). Notably, while the Inner circuit were described in detail, the famed Outer sites such as Ballyeon (鉢淵), Guryongyeon (九龍淵), and Manmulsang (萬物相) (prominent from the mid-eighteenth century) were omitted. Afterward the travel route led to Chongseokjeong (叢石亭) in Tongcheon (通川); Samilpo (三日浦), Haegeumgang (海金剛), Cheongganjeong (清澗亭), Naksansa (洛山寺), and Gyeongpodae (鏡浦䑓); then the party returned over Daegwallyeong (大關嶺) along the shortcut via Hoenggye (横溪), Jinbu (珍冨), Daehwa (大和), Ungyo (雲橋), Owon (梧原) and last to the provincial seat in Wonju(原州). Distinctive features include a departure with several hundred personnel and mounts over numerous stages; courtesies exchanged with magistrates of towns not directly visited; directives to repair official pavilions; the use of a temporary bridge assembled from sea boats; and a large military review upon return to the provincial seat.
