Abstract

This paper inquires into discourses concerning the Asian Roads, which have been discussed in terms of the so-called 'Axial Age.' Its purpose is to review the logic of Confucian Capitalist theories that deal with the stagnation of the West and the rise of Asia, and to show the theoretical implications of what Confucian Modernization discourses have in pursuing alternative ways of development in Asia. First of all, it thus addresses problems with ethnocentric viewpoints innate in the theories of West European Origin of capitalism. Secondly, it tries to reveal the fact that most of Confucian capitalism theories, having appeared in the context of East Asian economic development, find out some functional equivalents of Protestant Ethics in Asia, whereas such discourses as world system theory and reOrient thesis pay attention to the unique potentials that the Asian societies have, including China, even though all of them lack socio-structural analyses and explanations. Lastly, it reviews some ‘discourses of multiple modernities’ in the context that existing explanations on the characteristics of the Middle Ages and modern times have been challenged. thus implying that Confucian modernization theories face a new challenge to seek out an alternative way of development reflecting the active expression of Asian People‘s will to overcome the Western measuring stick and standards.
