Abstract
While the criticism that the manufacturing industry generates less employment than in the service industry has been raised, previous studies have presented mixed empirical results on the employment stability of the manufacturing industry implying that its effect can differ by economic growth stage and economic fluctuation. This study aims to analyze the contribution of manufacturing sector to the employment stability or downward rigidity according to economic growth stage and economic fluctuation, so I constructed the panel data consisting of 38 Asian countries from the UN, World Bank and TED databases. The results show that the manufacturing sector contributed to the employment stability of Asian countries with gross national income per capita more than 20 thousand dollars but this effect did not appear under the economic crisis. This can be attributed to the fact that the manufacturing industry in the country above $ 20,000 can contribute to employment stability by enjoying market advantage based on excellent manpower and technology. However, since Asian manufacturing industries, which are highly dependent on exports, are sensitive to global demand slowdown, so the manufacturing industry is not contributing to the downward rigidity of the employment rate.
