환율이 한국 제조업 업종별 고용에 미치는 영향

초록

본 연구는 지역별 패널자료를 이용하여 2000년대 한국 제조업 업종별 고용 및 임금에 대한 환율의 영향을 분석하였다. 환율은 수출입 경로를 통해 노동시장에 영향을 미치는데, 수출입에 대한 환율의 영향은 산업별 뿐 만 아니라 업종별로도 다르게 나타나므로 제조업 업종별 고용 및 임금이 원화의 실질가치 변동에 얼마나 민감하게 반응하는지를 확인하고자 하였다. 그 결과 2000년대 한국 제조업 고용에 대한 환율의 영향은 제한적이며, 대부분의 업종에서 고용에 대한 환율 탄력성은 부(-)로 나타나 원화 실질가치 하락이 고용에 부정적 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 무역에 대한 환율의 영향이 과거 전통적 제조업 중심의 수출입구조를 설명하는 데는 적합할지라도 최근과 같이 첨단기술을 바탕으로 하는 업종 중심의 무역구조 하에서는 설명력이 약하다는 것을 보여주는 결과이다. 따라서 향후 수출입 경로를 통한 환율의 고용효과를 보다 체계적으로 분석하기 위해서는 제조업 업종을 보다 세분화하여 분석함으로써 세부 업종별 효과가 서로 상쇄되는 누적편의를 제거할 필요가 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The change of exchange rate will affect employment known by the factor of domestic firms' earning and production through the change of relative price. In this paper, we attempt to examine the effects on employment and wage of Korean manufacturing items of exchange rate over the period 2000 to 2009. Our results show that the general pattern in the effect of exchange rate shock is negatively associated with the employment of Korean manufacturing. It is also confirmed that the effects of exchange rate on both employment and wage through export and import processes are differ from manufacturing items. These results suggest that although the effect of exchange rate may have suitable in the past trade structure which is centered on traditional manufacturing items, it is un-explainable in the recent trade structure of manufacturing based on high-tech. Thus, it is necessary to fractionation analysis of manufacturing sectors for more systematical analysis of the effect of exchange rate shock through export and import processes on manufacturing employment.
