Abstract
The purpose of this study is to conduct a land use survey of Shanghai Street in Busan’s Chinatown—an area densely populated with ethnic shops—and to analyze its spatial characteristics and landscape changes. The findings are as follows. First, a multilingual landscape has emerged through the signage of ethnic shops, indicating that they cater to customers of various nationalities. These shops are not clustered by business type or language, but are instead dispersed throughout the area. Second, entertainment establishments targeting Russian clientele are concentrated particularly near the West Gate, which is relatively distant from the Chinese community school. This suggests that Shanghai Street, as an extension of the former Texas Street, has evolved into a diverse commercial district distinct from the traditional image of Chinatowns worldwide, encompassing not only Chinese businesses but also Russian and other ethnic enterprises. Third, although the Chinese-style landscape in Busan’s Chinatown reflects traditional Chinatown imagery, it also displays spatial characteristics of multicultural coexistence. Therefore, the ethnic space in Busan’s Chinatown is transforming into a new type of ethnic enclave, characterized by the coexistence of diverse cultures, industries, and languages, rather than preserving a singular Chinese identity.
