Abstract

The oversea Chinese in Korea has been newly focused due to both globalization and the restructuring of Korean economy after the early 1990s, and local autonomous governments have built Chinatown to induce oversea Chinese capital and Chinese tourists. Based on a liminal space as an analytical framework, this study investigates how the Ch’eongwan Street as a traditional living place of the oversea Chinese in Busan has been changed as the Shanghae Street constructed and named by the autonomous government of Busan Metropolitan City. The results of the study are summarized as three aspects. Firstly, after the Korea War, the localized Ch’eongwan Street had been transformed as a liminal space because the dislocalized Texas Village had built at its neighboring area. That is, the liminal space was produced as an undeciding and risk location of crossing the characteristics of the oversea Chinese - rooted Ch’eongwan street and those of the U.S. Army - based Texas Village mobile and uncertain. Secondly, after the 1990s, the autonomous government of Busan Metropolitan City has built Chinese-styled architectures and symbols in the Ch’eongwan Street remaned as the Shanghae Street. As a result of such a cognition and practice of the local government, the Ch’eongwan Street was dislocalized and its name itself was erased. Thirdly, the oversea Chinese’s life had been very much hard in the the Ch’eongwan Street as a liminal space. And the traces of overthrowing the existing order and authority of a Korean society and of pursuing freedom from the existing institutions were not seen the oversea Chinese’s life in the liminal space.
