Abstract

This paper analyzes the impact of male labor migration from central Vietnam to Korea on gender relations within the local community and family in their home country, and explores how migration reconstructs the existing structure of gender inequality. In the traditional gender structure of central Vietnam, men were primarily responsible for economic support, while women were responsible for housework and childcare, with a clear division of roles. However, labor migration to Korea improved men’s economic status as well as their social status. On the other hand, women in the home country increased their economic independence and expanded their social participation within the local community. These changes changed traditional gender relations and ideas about marriage, and resulted in redefining their self-esteem and identity. It can be said that overseas labor migration can change not only individuals or families, but also the sociocultural ideas of the home country.
