Abstract

This study examines how different generations perceive the residential environment of the Tokyo Waterfront, with a special focus on the waterside, in order to propose improvements. The aim is to provide insights that can help enhance the urban waterfront environment. Specifically, a survey was administered to residents of apartment housing in the Tokyo Waterfront, and factor analysis was employed to examine changes in the perceived importance of, and satisfaction with, waterside features across younger, middle-aged, and elderly generations. The results revealed that residents’ perceptions of the importance of these waterside features prior to moving in and their satisfaction after moving in changed significantly, with noticeable differences across generations. Based on these findings, future improvements to apartment housing in the Tokyo Waterfront should harmoniously reflect each generation’s views. In particular, improvements should emphasize public value for younger generations, ensure safety and health for the middle-aged, and provide leisure and recreational opportunities for the elderly.
