Abstract
This article analyzes the processes involved in the formation of ‘globalhouseholds’ through inter-marriages between among Koreans andVietnamese in South Korea. It draws on in-depth interviews withVietnamese women and their Korean spouse who participated in thehome-visit program sponsored by the Korean Women's Foundation, as wellas their family members in Vietnam, to examine the specific transnationalpractices and connections developed by these families. It aims at showinghow home visits to Vietnam have expanded the awareness of familymembers to develop specific transnational practices, including the sendingof remittances from South Korea to Vietnam, and inviting of familymembers from Vietnam to South Korea to enable them to participate inraising children and economic activities. This paper also explores how someKorean husbands consider their wife's homeland as a possible place ofsettlement after retirement. This global household may keep its stabilitywhen efforts to maintain a family as a social unit are constantly madethrough the global exchanges and cooperation of members of the twofamilies. The perspective of global household calls for a shift away from theSouth Korean government's integration policy on marriage migrant womento be solely assimilated to Korean culture and family.
