Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the lived experience of cross-border marriagemigrant women’ remittances which are occurred in the context of family relationship. Research questions are how marriage migrant women deal with their intentions to providemonetary support against their husbands’ ones and how they negotiate to achieve theremittance needs. Marriage migrant women commanded various bargaining resources, ranging fromperfoming the expected gender role perfectly, finding a job, persuasding their husbandsand redefining the family relationship and so on. There are 5 types of marriage migrantwomen’s stratagies. a) Sending remittances is the case that they perform their gender roleswell such as childbirth, nurthuring and so on, then their husband give the money as areward of wife’s efforts of gender roles performance. b) Migrant women set the familyboundaries redefined who are their family. This shows well the transnational family tiesare transformable and negotiable. c) Marriage migrant women return their identities asVietnames woman as she doesn’t migrate. d) They think the remittance as return moneyto their husband when they may retire some day e) They find a job to send the moneyto their natal family. On the other hand, marriage migrant women are standed in controdictory position inKorea Immigrant Law regime and patriarchy family system. Migrant woman works forher daughter because her husband abandoned the living, so she becomes the breadwinnerposition on household. But she doesn’t attain the Korean citizenship on account of herhusband’s disagreement. Another case, marriage migrant woman can’t form with her natalfamily in the same household in Korea because the right of family formation is strictlyrestricted. Findings in this study will pave a way for more comprehensive research on remittancesformed by different migrant ethnic descent and emigration type.
