Abstract
This study aimed to explore in depth the parenting experiences of mothers of middle-and high-school students with Asperger’s Disorder. In-depth interviews were conducted with four mothers, and the data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as outlined by Smith et al. (2009). Five major themes emerged from the analysis: “Searching for a school that fits the child”, “The dilemma of invisible disabilities”, “Protecting the child in a changed environment”, “Increasing educational challenges as students advance in grade level” and “Endless social skills training”. Thirteen subthemes were also identified, including “Difficulty finding inclusive mainstream schools”, “Challenges in disclosing the child’s disability during adolescence”, “Protecting the child from school violence, whether the child is a victim or unintentionally involved as a perpetrator”, “Feeling marginalized among parents focused on college entrance preparation” and “Experiencing burnout in the process of developing school-specific manuals”. This study offers nuanced insights into the lived realities of mothers raising adolescents with Asperger’s Disorder. The findings provide foundational implications for counseling interventions and informs the development of more systematic and supportive educational policies.
