Abstract

It has not been too long since scholars in Thai began in earnest investigating the linguistic phenomena, “grammaticalization,” despite the fact that various aspects of grammaticalization had been previously discovered in the Thai language. Studying the aspects of meaning extension and grammaticalization of body part terms, particularly among the basic vocabulary that shows the forms of broad grammaticalization, may provide an important key to understanding the cognitive system of Thai speakers. The primary goal of this study is to comparatively analyze the aspects of broad grammaticalization and the cognitive mechanism that brings about such grammaticalization of two frequently used Thai body part terms, /naa/ (‘face’) and /lang/ (‘back’), with regard to their meaning extension from their prototypical meaning from spatial meaning to temporal meaning and their functional changes from nouns to prepositions. Furthermore, based on survey results collected from sixty non-Thai major students, this research present a proposal and suggests how the cognitive linguistic approach can contribute in educating students who learn Thai as a foreign language.
