본 논문이 주된 독해의 대상으로 채택한 저서는 「The Kingdom and Glory」와 「Opus Dei」이다.
Abstract
This study aims to interpret Giorgio Agamben’s archeological exploration of the concepts of government and office in light of public administration. Agamben has been known as a philosopher who speculates about the ontological relations between sovereign power and the form-of-life of the human. In the recent years, specifically in the book of The Kingdom and Glory, Agamben seemed to change the focus of his analysis on the apparatus of Western civilization, this time paying more attention to the governmental power than the sovereign one. While arguing that government must be considered a no less pivotal pillar supporting Western societies for long time than sovereign power, Agamben’s endeavor to track down the theological origin of political and administrative concepts extends to over the concepts of office, duty and administrative ethics. In this extension of archeological study, Agamben brings to light the indissoluble connection between the concept of office and duty (ethics), as he makes it clear that the realization of the duty of priesthood is dependent upon the effectiveness of office. Such a finding helps us to understand why the ethics of public officials could divorce from the intrinsic nature of officials themselves. Agamben’s genealogical and archeological investigation of the concept of government and office, therefore, gives us the hidden clues to find out the ontological premises that underpin such administrative concepts as govern, rule, reign, and duty.
