초록

Many studies on Agamben and his philosophy illuminated the modern philosopher’s deep insight into sovereign power and bare life in human society. Among Agamben’s books, Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life and Profanations are known to portray the representative ideas of his philosophy. Apart from the ideas of sovereign power, bare life, profanation, and secularization, however, it is needed to recognize the fact that Agamben also finds out the strong subversive power of Christian spirituality through rereading of St. Paul’s epistles. As it is illustrated in The Time That Remains: A Commentary on the Letter to the Romans, Agamben’s way of reading of St. Paul’s epistles does not fully support the traditional interpretation of orthodox Christian church in the aspect that he does not emphasize the importance of pistis in the relationship between God and His people. However, Agamben discovers the dynamic power of messianic ideas in Christianity and St. Paul’s epistles. Especially, he focuses on the idea of the remnant and parousia. Differently from many eschatological theories by modern theologians that are based on the ideas of ‘already’ and ‘not yet’, he regards parousia as an event that human beings can totally experience at present time. He witnesses the power of messianic ideas which subverts the sovereign power of the Judean society of the early Christian history. Agamben intrinsically quests for the possibility and potentiality from Christian spirituality in order to overcome the potential threat of sovereign power in modern society.
