‘좋은 교육’의 목적 : ‘함께하는 마음눈’ 키우기

교육이 이루어지는 곳에는 항상 학생에게 ‘바람직한 변화’가 있기를 바라고 그 변화를 시도하기 위한 특정한 활동이 이루어진다. 그래서 ‘교육’은 항상 ‘좋은’ 가치를 지향하는 활동인 셈이다. ‘좋은 교육’이라 할 때에는 사실상으로는 ‘좋은’이란 용어가 중복되어 진 셈이다. ‘좋은 교육’을 논할 경우에나 교육의 방향을 논할 때에는 가치가 개입되어 있으며, 더욱이 좋은 교육을 말 할 때에는 항상 가치판단과 관련되어 있다. 즉, 바람직한 가치가 무엇인가에 관련되어 있으며, 이를 어떻게 결정해야 좋은 교육이라고 말할 수 있는가하는 문제와 관계된다. 그런데 어려운 문제는 어느 누구에게도 동일하게 적용될 수 있는 고정된 절대 가치를 찾기란 어려운 일이다. 따라서 이 논문에서는 교육관련 당사자들이 보다 용이하게 ‘좋은 교육’에 대해 합의를 이룰 수 있는 조건을 논의하고 있는데, 그 조건은 결국 공동체적 삶을 모범적으로 유지하기 위한 조건과 그 맥을 같이 하고 있다는 결론을 낸 셈이다. 좋은 교육을 판단하고 유지하기 위한 합리적인 조건을 유지하기 위해서 필요한 구성원들이 지녀야 할 특성으로, 활력, 감수성과 공감, 용기와 자존, 인간존중, 열린 지성적 탐구방법, 참여와 초연의 변증법을 제시하고 있다. 그런데, 이는 공동체의 한 일원으로서 공동체적 삶을 만들어 가기 위해 요청되는 특성들이라고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 공동체적 삶에 요청되는, 아니, 인간의 삶의 내재적 특성, 즉, 종국적으로 갖추어야 할 특성으로서, ‘함께 할 수 있는 마음눈 키우기’를 제시하고 있다. 그리고 결론과 제언에서는 이러한 입장에서, 현행 우리나라의 교육을 검토하고 그 개선의 방향을 제시하고 있는데, 수평적 민주적 의사소통구조 활착, 학력과 우등생에 대한 새로운 개념 도입, 국가수준의 교육과정축소 및 교사의 교재편성권확대, 가슴과 머리를 함께 키우는 교육, 교사교육과정에 다양한 삶체험프로그램운영 등을 제시하고 있다.
Abstract
Education is about supporting ‘desirable changes' in students and acting on them to make such changes. Education is always about seeking the ‘good.' When you say ‘good education,' technically the word 'good' is redundant. Therefore, when discussing the goal of education, value is already implied in it. Moreover, when discussing ‘good education,’ it is always related to value judgement. 'Good education' is closely connected with what desirable value is and how to set one. However, it is extremely difficult to find an absolute value which can be applied to everyone. Therefore, this paper suggests building an environment where the people in education field can easily reach a consensus on ‘good education.’ Furthermore, it is concluded that such atmosphere started from an education field can be spread into the society to construct a solid community and to keep community sound. The suggested personalities needed in such environment are: vitality, sensitiveness and sympathy, courage and self-respect, respect for human, open-mindedness and intelligence, and dialectic of participation and detachment. These traits are also needed in a solid community life. But the crucial attitude is having a ‘mind-eye’ to be together with neighbors. From this perspective, our current education system in Korea was reviewed and strategies to improve it were set at the end of this paper. The strategies are: democratic relationship between members in educational system, innovating the conventional definition on honor students and academic achievements, reducing governmental control on school curriculum and expanding teacher's rights on organizing teaching materials, breeding student's heart and head together, and opening life-centered courses in teacher's education program.
