플라톤의 『법률』에 나타난 절제와 시민교육

이 논문은 플라톤의 『법률』에 등장하는 절제(sōphrosynē)와 시민교육의 의의를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 플라톤은 『법률』에서도 『국가』와 같이 한편으로는 이상적 인간상 및 정치체제를 고민하였으며, 다른 한편으로는 현실 가능한 방안을 제시하고 있다. 『법률』에서 그는 폴리스의 구성원들이 절제를 통해 좋은 습관을 갖는 것을 기초 교육으로 정의하고 이를 지향했다. 『법률』에서 절제는 시민교육의 목적이며 절제의 함양은 합창가무(chorus)와 전문(prooimion)을 통한 설득으로 완성된다. 차선의 공동체 마그네시아(Magnesia)는 시민들을 절제의 덕으로 습관화시킬 때 훌륭한 상태를 유지하게 된다.
Abstract
This study is for enhancing the boundaries of educational thought of Plato, especially by analyzing his latest work Nomoi. There have been many studies on Plato's educational thought based on Politeia, however Nomoi has many ideas and implications on education for Magnesia, ideal city described in Nomoi. In Nomoi, he defined education as having good habit and custom, and emphasized temperance(sōphrosynē). The meaning of temperance is applied to both character education for children and education of citizen in Magnesia. Children internalized sōphrosynē by practicing chorus(singing and dancing). Citizen is Magnesia naturally obey and agree with the law because in law in Magnesia, there is prelude which announce the meaning, object, and outcome of obeying the laws. Playing chorus and persuading the people by preludes are means to make Magnesia temperate.
