Abstract
John Dewey argues that nature is a process characterized by direct enjoyment, i.e., by having qualities through direct perception. This paper aims to clarify the teleological structure of the concept of nature based on Dewey’s arguments made in chapter 3 of Experience and Nature. To meet its objective, this paper adopts the following contents and methodologies. First, Section 2 attempts to systematically analyze qualities characteristic of Dewey’s theory of experience. ‘Continuous cycle of experience’ and ‘denotative relation between events’ as identified by an analytical discussion on functions of qualities manifest Dewey’s understanding of expereince. For Dewey, experience is the transition from one direct perception to another direct perception and the qualitative and instrumental dimensions of experience are aspects functionally designed to highlight the dynamism of experience. Section 3 establishes direct enjoyment which Dewey proposes as purpose of life as the logical starting point for a teleological definition of nature. According to Dewey, direct enjoyment refers to the subject-matter of experience, that is, what is experienced. In order to highlight that experience encompasses both what and how, Dewey replaces the concept of experience with that of culture. Keeping in mind Dewey’s intention of replacing experience with culture, that is, ‘meaning production and enjoyment’, it is attempted to define nature as ‘cultural environment’ and ‘cultural enjoyment’. This conceptualization of nature from the perspective of culture proves the fact that qualities are invested of their raison d’être by nature and that the raison d’être of qualities invest all the processes of experience and the whole (nature) formed on the basis thereof with their teleological openness and plurality. Lastly, Section 4 attempts to elucidate the practical significance of the concept of nature based on Dewey’s discussion about the relationship between philosophy and social organization. Hierarchy does not exist in direct enjoyment that directly holds on nature as a whole, nor does it exist in various re-enactments of the form of workaday life that form a concrete context for occurrences of direct enjoyment. Non-hierarchy among re-enactments forms the basis for the establishment of an open and plural social relationship and organization.
