Abstract

While Jean-Jacques Rousseau is widely known as the leading figure of the 18th century French Enlightenment, other French Enlightenment scholars have not received much scholarly attention. This study began with an assumption that there must be some scholars in the same era who had significantly impacted Rousseau who reached the climax of educational philosophy of French Enlightenment. I argue that one of the sources or origins of Rousseau’s educational philosophy comes from E. G. Morelly, the author of Essai sur l’esprit humain, ou Principes Naturels de L’Education(1743), and Essai sur le coeur humain ou Principes Naturels de L’Education(1745). In this article, I explore Morelly’s life and thoughts, two educational treatises, and educational thoughts found in the treatises and study the similarities and differences between Morelly and Rousseau. The French educational thinkers in the 18th Enlightenment were confronted with the problems of the conflict between contradictory concepts such as individual and national enlightenment, enlightenment and utility, malleability and nature, nature and habit, and self-love and virtue. Both Morelly and Rousseau emphasized individual’s enlightenment and importance of nature and supported the identity of self-love and virtue. However, they differed in that, while Morelly believed in a man’s innate social nature, Rousseau developed the idea of ‘natural order’ that Morelly had originally suggested into an established concept of ‘education that follows the nature’--the concept that became the core of Rousseau’s educational thoughts in the 18th century.
