Abstract
Dewey advances his philosophical method through the conceptual analysis of the nature of experience. According to Dewey, conventional philosophy commits a fallacy hypostatizing the functional results of reflexion as existence temporally antecedent to reflexion itself. Dewey’s philosophical method is a conceptual instrument devised to resolve this philosophical fallacy. The purpose of this study is to establish that Dewey’s re-designing of school environment represents simultaneously a diagnosis of the philosophical fallacy that arises within the educational plane as well as an attempt to educationally resolve this fallacy. To this end, this study proceeds as follows: First, Section 2 systematically analyses the concept of ‘quality’ which is central to Dewey’s philosophy. The philosophical discussion on immediate existence conceptually clarifies primary experience. Section 3 systematically analyses ‘denotative relation’ from the perspective of the function of signs. The philosophical discussion on the difference between existence and function conceptually clarifies secondary experience. Section 4 explains how the continuity between life within school and that outside of school is logically equivalent to the circular relationship between primary and secondary experiences. Based on this explanation, this study attempts to demonstrate that the re-designing of school environment is an educational project for resolving the philosophical fallacy and for restoring the continuous circularity between primary and secondary experiences. Section 5, the last section of this study, examines how the learning experience in school can be conjoined with the concrete context of life, thereby elucidating the educational practicality implied in the re-designing of school environment.
