듀이의 자연주의적 형이상학에 대한 비판론 검토

이 글은 듀이의 자연주의적 형이상학에 대한 로티와 산타야나의 비판을 듀이의 입장에서 비판적으로 재검토하고 그의 형이상학이 주는 교육적 시사점을 모색하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 로티는 듀이의 형이상학이 전통적 체계 철학과 명확히 차별화되지 않는다는 점을 비판하고 있다. 그것은 듀이가 말하는 ‘존재의 일반적 특징’이 종래 형이상학에서 추구하는 ‘존재의 궁극적 특징’과 차별화되지 않는다는 의문에서 야기된 것이다. 이러한 비판은 듀이의 입장에서 보면, 가변적 세계를 특징짓는 원리적 준거의 탐구를 보편적 실재에 대한 탐구로 오해한데서 비롯된 것이다. 한편, 산타야나는 듀이의 ‘전경의 우위’로서의 자연주의가 포괄적 자연을 담지 못한다는 점을 지적함은 물론, 자연주의와 형이상학이 양립 불가능하다는 비판적 견해를 피력한다. 이에 대해 듀이는 ‘자연의 전경’이 자연의 여타 부분과 연속성을 띠어 경험을 무한히 확대시킬 수 있다는 점, 그리고 자연주의적 형이상학은 종래 이원론적 개념이 아닌, 자연과 경험의 연속성 하에서 규정되어야 한다는 점을 주장한다. 한 마디로 말해 듀이의 자연주의적 형이상학은 경험적이고 과학적인 방식으로 우리를 둘러싼 세계의 일반적 특징을 탐구하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 듀이의 자연주의적 형이상학은 교육적 맥락에서는 교과를 배우는 일이 자연과의 교호작용 속에서 일어나는 것이며, 따라서 학습자의 단위 경험이 끊임없이 자신을 둘러싼 세계에 대한 의미의 확장으로 연계될 수 있도록 조력해야 한다는 것을 보여준다.
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to re-examine Rorty and Santayana's criticisms of Dewey's naturalistic metaphysics, and to search the implications of Dewey's naturalistic metaphysics for modern education. Rorty's criticism is that Dewey's metaphysics is not clearly distinguished from the traditional 'systematic philosophy'. Rorty's criticism arises from the question that general traits of existences in Dewey, is not clearly distinguished from the ultimate traits of existences that traditional philosophers have pursued. Dewey's answer to this critical question is that the inquiry of general traits of existences does not mean the inquiry of ultimate traits of existences, but the inquiry of main features of this changeable world that surrounds us. Santayana's criticism is that Dewey's naturalism as the dominance of the foreground does not involve the comprehensive concept of nature, and also that Dewey's naturalism and metaphysics are incompatible. Dewey's answer to this criticism is that the foreground of nature relates to the other part of nature, and this continuity can grow experience itself infinitely. And Dewey insists that his naturalistic metaphysics has to be defined from the viewpoint of continuity between nature and experience. In a word, Dewey's metaphysics is to inquiry the empirical world by using scientific method. In this context, this study is to make clear the intent of Dewey's metaphysics related to this controversy, and to search its implications for modern education.
