Abstract
The purpose of the thesis is to define significance of Darwinism on Dewey's philosophy. In the thesis, I have argued that Darwinism plays a crucial role not only in Dewey's reconstructing idea of experience, but also in establishing his philosophy basically and comprehensively, providing a foundation of his view of world and philosophy. For him, Darwinism means that there is no supernatural and fixed ‘essence’, ‘form’, or ‘ideal.’ From Darwinism, he accept anti-essentialism which don't posit any essential purpose or form. He argue that if evolution has been caused by historical accumulation of accidental variation, the idea of fixed form which has been based on classic philosophies can not be supported as the logic of Darwinism. Based on the anti-essentialism, He do not see world as progress toward transcendental purpose, but as uncertain and incessantly changeable place. For him, this open world is also the world of possibility and the world in which ideal can be made. He thinks that in this uncertain world, we should create unceasingly our own ideals and meanings. According to him, philosophy should play a instrumental role in the process of creating meanings. Because he understand education as this process of creation, it can be said that his philosophy is ‘philosophy as education.’
