Abstract
According to Rousseau, modern society has been on the moral decline due to excessive egoism and other-dependence aggravated by the struggle for recognition. To remedy this kind of distortion, Rousseau proposes moral education. In this education, passion, drawn from the ideal of perfectibility, plays a central role while being guided by reason and transformed by pity. For a passion-centered moral education, passions such as amour de soi and amour-propre do not need to be suppressed or restricted and they rather require direction to their proper end in the form of universal morality and justice. In this process, the sentiment of pity and the intelligence of reason serve passion for expanding its concern from the concrete others to the generalized and abstract others. This paper focuses on how passion, reason and pity interact each other for further moral development into justice. The unity of passion and reason is what makes informed moral beings and allows them to pursue the reciprocal recognition and common interest among equals. This paper finally examines the ways to connect moral education to citizenship education within Rousseau's framework.
