이 연구는 영국 뉴몰든 코리아타운을 남북한 출신 주민들이 상호작용하는 ‘코리안 디아스포라 초국적 접촉지대’중 하나로 정의하고, 이 지역의 남한이주민과 북한난민 간 사회관계와 상호인식을살펴본다. 뉴몰든의 유럽 유일 코리아 타운은 남한이주민, 조선족이주민, 그리고북한난민 등 세 그룹 코리안들의 초국적이주에 의해 형성된 사회적 공간이다. 서로 다른 이주 시기 및 배경을 가진 이 세그룹의 코리안들은 영국 사회에서 서로 다른 사회적 위치를 점하고 있지만, 동시에‘종족경제’ 구성원의 일원으로서 활발히상호작용하며 살아가고 있다. 민족지적 현장연구에 기반한 이 연구는 이들 중 특히남한이주민과 북한난민 간의 사회관계와상호인식에 초점을 맞추어 서로 다른 배경과 자원을 가진 이 두 그룹 구성원들이 영국이라는 제3의 공간에서 어떤 사회적 관계를 맺고 상호작용하며 서로에 대해 어떠한 인식을 형성하고 있는지, 그리고 이에영향을 주는 요소들은 무엇인지 살펴본다. 이 연구는 두 가지 점에서 의미를 가진다. 첫째, 이주의 시대 다양한 코리안 그룹들의 초국적 이주가 기존의 코리안 종족공동체를 어떻게 변형시키고 있는지에 대해 특히 북한난민을 주요 행위자로 포함시켜 살펴보는 첫 연구이다. 둘째, 남북한 사람들의 접촉양상이 공간적 특성에 따라 어떤차이가 있는지에 대한 더 큰 맥락의 비교연구를 위한 기초자료로서 활용가능성이크다
Abstract
This study defines the Korean Town in New Malden, UK, as one of the “Korean Diasporas'transnational contact zones” in which South Korean immigrants and North Korean refugees interactwith each other. It investigates social relations and perceptions of each other between the twogroups. New Malden is the only Korea Town in Europe and a social space that has been formedby transnational migrations of three Korean groups: South Korean migrants, Korean Chinese migrantsand North Korean refugees. These three groups have migrated to UK in different timeperiod and occupy different social locations. However, they actively interact with each other asmembers of “ethnic economy.” This study focuses on the relations between South Korean migrantsand North Korean refugees who have different backgrounds and resources, and analyzes1) the characteristics of their social relations and perceptions of each other and 2) factors thatinfluence on such characteristics. This study is meaningful in two senses. First, it is the first attemptto examine the impacts of transnational migrations of various Korean groups on the existingKorea Town especially by introducing North Korean refugees as one of the main actors. Second,it can be served as important data for a larger comparative study that analyzes how the “spacefactor” influences different results of contact between South and North Koreans, that in turn hasimplications for social integration of the two Koreas.
