이 글은 인천 남동구의 한 임대아파트 단지 일대에서 남북한 출신 주민들이 상호작용하며 만들어 가는 생활세계에 대한 연구이다. 인천 남동구는 한국사회의 구 단위에서는 북한출신주민들이 가장 많이 거주하는 지역이며 특히 임대아파트가 집중된 논현동 일대는 북한출신주민들의 가시성이 두드러져 때때로 ‘작은 북한’이라고도 불린다. 한편 ‘작은 북한’은 남한의 사회경제적 소수자들이 살아가고 있는 터전이기도 하다. 이 글은 이 중 임대아파트단지에서 이웃으로 거주하고 있는 남북한출신주민들의 상호작용에 초점을 맞추어 이들이 어떤 맥락에서 어떠한 방식으로 상호작용하며, 그 과정에서 발생하는 갈등을 어떻게 협상하는지, 그리고 이에 영향을 주는 요소들은 무엇인지 특히 ‘공간적 효과’를 중심으로 살펴보았다. 이 글은 구체적인 현장에서 남북한출신주민들의 상호작용과 이를 통해 형성된 사회관계를 살펴봄으로써, 이후 남북한 통합과정에서 발생할 수 있는 다양한 문제들을 예측하고 그 대안을 모색하는데 필요한 자료를 제공하는데 의미가 있다.
Abstract
This article is a short ‘ethnography’ on ‘everyday life’ that is constituted by interactions between North Korean immigrants and South Korean residents in Nonhyon-Dong, Namdong-gu, Inchon where many North Korean immigrants co-reside with native South Koreans at a public rental apartment complex. Namdong-gu is the area where the most North Korean immigrant residents reside on the ‘gu’ level and a public rental apartment complex of Nonhyon-Dong is the area where the visibility of North Korean immigrants is most salient. This paper examines contexts of contacts between South Korean and North Korean migrant residents of this apartment complex and aspects of conflicts and negotiations. In the process, it focuses on the “spatial effects” of these interactions. By examining interactions and social relations of South-North Korean people in a specific social space, this paper provides useful data to forecast diverse social issues that are likely to happen in the process of South-North Korean integration and to prepare for alternatives for those issues.
