‘IAPC 어린이철학 모델에 관한 국내 연구’에 대한 진단과 비판

초록

한국에서의 어린이 철학교육에 대한 많은 연구들이 IAPC의 어린이철학교육 모델을 기반으로 이루어지고 있는데, 일부 연구에서는 IAPC 창립멤버인 립맨과 매튜스의 철학교육방법론을 ‘어린이를 위한 철학(PfC)’와 ‘어린이와 함께하는 철학(PwC)’이라는 프레임으로 설정하고, 립맨의 방법론을 비판하면서 매튜스의 방법론을 옹호한다. 본고는 어린이철학과 관련해서 립맨의 PfC와 매튜스의 PwC라는 프레임은 적절하지 않으며, 립맨과 매튜스는 P4C의 구성원으로서 철학적인 논리적 추론를 중시했다는 것을 논증하기 위해 먼저 립맨과 매튜스의 어린이 철학을 개괄한 후 국내 연구자들의 주장과 논거들을 분석했다. 그리고 매튜스의 방법론을 PwC로 해석하게 된 원인으로 IAPC 교재에 대한 편향된 해석, 매튜스의 논리적 추론에 대한 간과 등을 제시했다. 그리고 P4C에 대한 비판과 변화의 과정에서 등장한 PwC의 특징을 간략히 소개하면서 한국에서의 어린이철학교육 발전을 위해 어린이철학에 대한 철학적 연구과 교육학적 방법의 모색이 함께 이루어져야 함을 제안했다.

Abstract

Many studies on children's philosophy education in Korea are based on the IAPC's model of philosophy education for children. Lipman, M. and Matthews, G. B. the founding members of the IAPC, are distinguished by some researchers as the former with Philosophy for Children(PfC) and the latter with Philosophy with Children(PwC). And Lipman’s methodology with PfC is criticized by some researchers who support Matthews’ methodology with PwC. Regarding children's philosophy, this article first outlines the children's philosophy of Lipman and Matthews and argues that the current debate on the frame of PfC versus PwC is not convincing. This paper attempts to show instead that both of Lipman and Matthews consider the importance of the logical reasoning. The current debate stems from the unbalanced view of the IAPC textbook which identifies Matthews’ methodology as PwC. It shows the lack of understanding on Matthews’ emphasis on logical reasoning. I also briefly introduces the characteristics of PwC, which emerged in the course of critique and change of P4C, suggesting that philosophical research on children's philosophy should be pursued along with the search for educational methods for the development of children's philosophy education in Korea.
