립맨 ‘어린이 철학’의 형성과 전개에 관한 논의- 립맨 자서전을 중심으로 -

‘어린이 철학’ 교육을 주도한 립맨이 2010년 겨울 운명을 달리했다. 그의 ‘어린이 철학’교육은 미국뿐만 아니라 전 세계에 널리 보급되었지만, 프로그램의 가치와 의미를 둘러싼 논쟁도 오랫동안 지속되어 왔다. 그런데 그간의 논쟁들을 살펴보면, 비판자들은 ‘어린이 철학’의 근거가 되는 이론이나 철학교육의 실제에 대해 충분한 이해를 가지고 있지 못했으며, 지지자들도 이러한 비판에 대해 논리적으로 대응하기 보다는 감정적으로 반응해 왔던 것도 사실이다. 이러한 이유로 인해 립맨 어린이 철학을 근본적인 차원에서 재검토할 필요가 있다고 본다. 립맨은 자신의 마지막 저술인 자서전을 2008년 마무리했다. 립맨은 자신의 마지막 작품을 통해 어린이 철학의 형성배경과 전개 과정을 비교적 소상히 그리고 솔직히 밝히고 있다. 본 연구는 그의 자서전을 통해 어린이 철학의 성립과 발전 과정을 추적해 보는데 목적을 두었다. 립맨이 ‘어린이 철학’에 관심을 가지게 된 직접적 배경은 대학생들의 낮은 수준의 사고 능력 때문이지만, 어린 시절부터의 독서와 끊임없는 대화, 듀이와의 직·간접적 만남 등도 주요 배경이 되었다. 컬럼비아 대학에서의 아쉬움, 경제적 이유, ‘어린이 철학’에 대한 열망 등의 이유로 몽클레어로 대학을 옮기고, IAPC를 설립하여 ‘어린이 철학’의 프로그램화와 대중화를 추진하였다. IAPC를 통해 체계화된 립맨의 ‘어린이 철학’은 학생과 교사를 위한 체계적인 교재 출판, 엄격한 교사교육을 바탕으로 인지도를 높이고, 재정적 지원을 받으면서 미국 국내뿐만 아니라 전 세계의 철학교육 프로그램으로 자리를 굳히게 되었다.
Abstract
One of the most successful attempts to create a coherent programme in teaching thinking is the Philosophy for Children (p4c) programme, devised by Matthew Lipman and colleagues at Montclair University. The programme has been developed to provide a curriculum for philosophical enquiry for children from nursery to college level, and is un use in an increasing number of countries around the world. Although Lipman’s p4c has achieved great success, it has been confronted with a fierce dispute about the value and meaning of the program. The detractors of p4c have dismissed it as unintellectual, unphilosophical, unsocratic, undialogical, imperialistic and undemanding. The detractors are, with few exceptions, university- based academics with little, if any, experience of p4c in schools, either as practitioners or participants. In general, their attacks fail to engage earnestly with the theoretical literature on p4c, fail to take on board empirical findings, and fail to consider the views of kew stakeholders such as pupils. Though their attacks will be rendered the criticisms somewhat unedifying by above reasons, p4c fraternities should have consider their attacks carefully. This paper has this aim and tries to review Lipman’s life story to do it. Matthew Lipman(1922-2010) is recognized as the founder of p4c. His decision to bring philosophy to young people came from his experience as a professor at Columbia University, where he witnessed underdeveloped reasoning skills in his students. His interest was particularly on developing reasoning skills by teaching logic. The belief that children possess the ability to think abstractly from an early age, led him to the conviction that bringing logic to children’s education earlier would help them to improve their reasoning skills. In 1972 he left Columbia for Montclair State College to establish the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC) where he began to take philosophy into K-12 classrooms in Montclair. That year he also re-published his first book specifically designed to help children practice philosophy, Harry Stottlemeier’s Discovery. The IAPC continues to develop and publish curriculum, working internationally to advance and improve philosophy for children.
