이 글은 학교교육의 문제점이 포괄적 교육목적의 부재 및 교육목적과 교육과정의 논리적 연계성 부족에 있다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 교과기반 교육과정은 포괄적 목적에 대한 관심보다 교과 자체의 목적에 충실한 경향을 보인다. 우리나라 국가 교육과정도 총론에서 제시하고 있는 교육목적이 교육과정을 통해 구현되고 있다기보다는 그저 상징적인 선언에 그치고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 교육과정 개발은 교육목적에 대한 심도 있는 논의와 정치적 결정 과정이 필요하며, 설정된 포괄적 목적을 실현하는 구체적 노력이 동반되어야 한다. 이 글에서는 포괄적 목적의 설득력 있는 사례로 잘삶의 증진을 논의한다. 교육목적으로서 잘삶의 증진은 개인이 잘삶을 영위하도록 준비시키기, 타인의 잘삶을 돕도록 준비시키기, 폭넓은 배경 이해라는 목적들로 구체화될 수 있다. 이러한 목적기반 교육과정이 과학 교과에 적용될 때, 어떻게 구체적인 모습이 달라질 수 있는지를 간략히 논의한다. 기존 과학 교과의 수업이 학생들의 잘삶보다는 교과의 핵심 지식을 가르치는 데 치중하는 경직성을 보인다면, 목적기반 과학 과 수업은 기본 지식 외에 다양한 성향과 기능 등을 함께 함양하기 위한 노력을 하면서, 학생들의 잘삶 증진과 관련된 배경 이해를 돕는 교육목적에 충실하게 될 것이다.
Abstract
This article starts from the awareness that the problems of school education exist in the absence of the most overall aims and the gap between educational aims and the curriculum. The subjects-based curriculum tends to comply only with the purpose of the subjects themselves rather than the pursuit of the overall educational aims. The aims of the National Curriculum of Korea, as presented in its general guidelines, are just symbolic declarations, hardly something that are to be implemented through the curriculum. The development of curriculum requires in-depth discussions and political decision processes regarding the aims of education, and it should be accompanied by concrete efforts to realize the overall aims. In this article, the author discusses the idea of the promotion well-being as a persuasive example of the overall aims. The promotion of well-being as an educational aim can be embodied as the aim of preparing individuals to lead their own well-being, preparing them to help others' well-being, and understanding a wide range of backgrounds. When this aims-based curriculum is applied to school science subjects, it is briefly discussed how concrete that can be changed. If the existing science class is focused on teaching the key knowledge of the subject rather than the students' well-being, the aims-based science class will be faithful to the educational aims of helping students to understand the backgrounds related to the promotion of well-being while making efforts to cultivate various dispositions and skills together with basic knowledge.
