본 논문의 목적은 화이트헤드의 『관념의 모험』에 나타난 문명화 과정이 교과교육과 관련하여 지니는 교육학적 함의를 고찰하는 데에 있다. 화이트헤드가 『관념의 모험』을 저술한 목적은 문명의 개념과 문명화된 존재의 성격을 규명하는 것이며, 본 논문에서는 이를 교육학적 관점으로 해석함으로써 교육의 개념과 교육받은 존재에 관한 시사를 얻고자 한다. 즉, 『관념의 모험』에 나타난 문명화 과정으로서 관념의 모험을 통해, 교육, 특히나 교과교육의 의의를 확인하려는 것이다. 이에 따른 연구 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 문명화의 시작은 ‘관념의 검토’로 이루어진다. 관념의 검토를 통해 모든 관념의 이면에는 일반 관념이 존재한다는 형이상학적 사고를 할 수 있게 된다. 둘째, 문명화의 과정은 ‘관념의 모험’으로 이루어진다. 모든 관념은 일반관념을 토대로 하여 밀접하게 관련을 맺고 있으며, 관념은 이러한 관련성 속에서 시공간적으로 계열을 이루며 인류의 역사 속에 등장한다. 관념의 모험은 인간에게 주어진 여러 관념, 즉 여러 선택지 중에서 보다 가치 있는 선택지를 택할 수 있도록 발달하는 과정을 나타내며, 이는 궁극적으로 인간이 지니고 있는 자유를 통해 실현 가능한 것이다. 셋째, 문명화의 목적은 ‘관념의 구현’이다. 문명은 조화를 추구하는 일인데, 이러한 조화는 현상과 실재의 일치를 통해 실현된다. 현상과 실재의 일치를 추구하려는 노력은 진리, 아름다움, 모험, 예술, 평화와 같은 다섯 가지 궁극적 관념으로 구현된다. 이에 따라, 문명화의 과정으로서 관념의 모험 과정에 비추어 교과교육의 의의를 살펴보면 다음과 같다. 먼저, 관념의 검토는 교과교육을 왜 해야 하는가라는, 다음으로 관념의 모험은 교과교육을 어떻게 해야 하는가라는, 마지막으로 관념의 구현은 교과교육은 무엇을 추구하는가라는 질문에 대하여 각각 답해준다. 이와 같은 질문에 대한 대답을 종합하여 교과교육의 의의를 말하자면, 교과교육은 인간이 형이상학적 사고를 토대로, 자유로운 선택을 할 수 있는 능력을 길러서, 궁극적으로 진리, 아름다움, 모험, 예술, 평화를 추구하도록 하는 일이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the educational implications of the civilization process shown in Whitehead's 『Adventures of Ideas』 in relation to subject education. The purpose of Whitehead's writing of 『Adventures of Ideas』 is to investigate the concept of civilization and the character of civilized beings, and this paper attempts to obtain implications for the concept of education and educated existence by interpreting it from a educational perspective. In other words, this researcher intends to confirm the significance of education, especially subject education, through the adventure of ideas as a civilization process shown in 『Adventures of Ideas』, and the research contents accordingly are as follows. First, the beginning of civilization consists of a 'review of ideas'. Through the review of ideas, it is possible to make the metaphysical thinking that general ideas exist behind all ideas. Second, the process of civilization consists of an 'adventure of ideas'. All ideas are closely related based on general ideas, and ideas form a spatio-temporal series in these relationships and appear in the history of mankind. The adventure of ideas refers to the process of developing ideas given to humans, i.e., to choose more valuable options from many options, which is ultimately possible through the freedom of humans. Third, the purpose of civilization is 'the realization of ideas'. Civilization is the pursuit of harmony, and this harmony is realized through the unity of phenomena and reality. The effort to pursue the unity of phenomena and reality is embodied in five ultimate ideas: truth, beauty, adventure, art, and peace. Accordingly, the significance of subject education in the light of the adventure process of ideas as a process of civilization is as follows. First, the review of ideas answers the question of why subject education should be conducted, second, the adventure of ideas how subject education should be conducted, and finally, the realization of ideas answers the question of what subject education pursues. Based on the answers to these questions, subject education is about humans pursuing truth, beauty, adventure, art, and peace through free choices based on metaphysical thinking.
