이 연구는 화이트헤드의 교육이론을 그의 형이상학이론에 비추어 해석할 때 지식교육이 어떤 의미를 가지는가를 탐색하기 위한 것이다. 화이트헤드는 오늘날 지식교육의 문제를 ‘지식의 무기력성’으로 규정하면서 이때의 ‘무기력한 지식’을 ‘낭만 없는 이해’라는 말로 표현한다. ‘낭만 없는 이해’는 교육이 따라야 할 과정적 원리, 곧 ‘교육의 리듬’이라는 원리를 도외시한 결과이다. 교육이 따르는 이 과정적 원리가 어떤 것인가는 ‘과정이 곧 실재’라는 화이트헤드의 형이상학이론과 관련해서 이해될 수 있다. 실재에 관한 플라톤의 견해를 ‘형식이 곧 실재’라는 명제로 표현할 수 있다면, 화이트헤드의 그것은 ‘과정이 곧 실재’라는 명제로 표현된다. 이때 ‘형식으로서의 실재’가 눈앞에 펼쳐진 지금 여기의 자연세계로부터 추상된 궁극적 이념(이데아)을 가리키는 데 비해서, ‘과정으로서의 실재’는 합생과 이행의 과정을 반복하는 ‘현실적 존재’를 가리킨다. ‘현실적 존재’를 실재로 파악할 때, 실재는, 흔히 실재론자들이 주장하는 것과 달리, 고정불변의 것이 아니라 인식에 의해서 생성되고 발달하는 것이라는 의미를 가진다. 이 실재 개념에 따를 때, 교육은 낭만-정확성-일반화라는 인식의 상이한 양상들이 서로 배타적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 삼중의 사이클을 이루며 순환하는 것으로 설명된다. 이 의미의 교육에서 지식은 낭만에서 출발하여 일반화에 도달하지만, 이 일반화는 다시 낭만으로 되돌아간다. 요컨대, 교육은 ‘지식인’에서 끝나는 것이 아니라 ‘낭만인’을 기르는 일이다. 이론적으로 정확한 지식을 가지게 된 사람이 아니라 아무런 왜곡과 편견 없이 마치 아이처럼 순수한 마음으로 세상과 그 속의 사물들을 바라보고 질문을 던질 줄 아는 사람, 교육의 ‘목적’ 같은 것이 있다면 그것은 학습자로 하여금 이 의미에서의 ‘낭만인’이 되도록 하는 데에 있다.
Abstract
This study is to explore the meaning of knowledge education in A. N. Whitehead’s theory of education interpreted in view of his conception of Metaphysics. According to Whitehead, the problem of knowledge education today can be characterized by the term ‘inertness’, which is identified with ‘understanding without romance’. The rhythm of education that Whitehead suggests as a principle of educational process could be understood in relation to his metaphysical position about reality. Whitehead’s metaphysical position contrasts with classical conception of reality represented by Plato. Plato’s concept of reality could be expressed as a proposition ‘form is reality’, whereas Whitehead’s could be expressed as a proposition ‘process is reality’. Reality as a world of forms means ultimate ideas abstracted from the natural world here, whereas reality as a process means actual entities that repeat the process of concrescence and transition constantly. According to this concept of reality as a actual entity, reality is regarded not a fixed substance but a constant becoming process by knowing. In the process of knowledge education, three different phases of romance-precision-generalization should consist in a continual repetition of threefold cycles. In this cycle, knowledge starts from the phase of romance, and return to the romance again. In this respect, education does not end in ‘intellectual’ but ‘romantist’. In short, if we could think of ‘the aim of education’, it is to make students be a romantist who can see the world and things in it with a pure spirit like a child without any perversion or prejudice.
