Abstract
Considering Whitehead's metaphysical system, this study seeks to understand process philosophy, which Whitehead referred to as “all education must be religious in nature.” The following are two statements that serve as clues to understanding the word “education is religious”: (1) religion requires the cooperation of metaphysics, and (2) humans cannot be religious unless they are alone. Chapter II reveals that Whitehead's metaphysics as a process philosophy is the basic premise of religion. Next, Chapter III examines “loneliness,” a key element of religious formation and how the religious experience through solitude changes according to Whitehead's metaphysical process philosophy. Specifically, religious experiences first allow humans to focus on themselves through solitude and self-assess themselves in this state of solitude. Second, rational thinking works to justify and rationalize religious experiences. Here, rational thinking reveals that solitude derived from religious experiences is a kind of methodical solitude. By revealing that solitude was the method, rational thinking attempts to expand the individuality of religious experiences through self-assessment to the universality of philosophical insights through world evaluation. Third, philosophical insight reveals aspects of the world that cannot be explained by rational thinking, and that this aspect is a truth revealed through the relationship between self-assessment and world evaluation, In Whitehead's tone. That is, it is a synthesis of the individual and universal. The pedagogical implications of Whitehead's religious formation process are as follows: First, metaphysics is the basic premise of education. Second, the process of education ultimately extends from individual religious experiences to philosophical insights through rational thinking. Nevertheless, it is to ensure that the initial individuality is not lost.
