Abstract

This study analyzes pedagogical issues that arose during non-face-to-face remote classes(online classes) conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, using Emmanuel Lévinas’s ethical concepts of the Other. The “strangeness” students exhibited as “faceless screens” in remote classes is interpreted as a manifestation of alterity, the face(le visage), as described by Lévinas. This encounter disrupted the totality of the class that the reseacher, as a teacher, had assumed. From the perspective of alterity, teaching or the class invites students to move beyond their internal subjectivity and enter the space of “saying”(le dire). The teacher’s “saying” calls students to respond to the summons of the world’s exteriority. In addition, “the said” (le dit) within the saying is an object of enjoyment that guides life and thought toward the dimension of the Infinity. Goals traditionally associated with liberal education, such as self-knowledge, rationality, autonomy, and self-realization, may appear similar to the “freedom of interiority” that Lévinas criticizes. However, Lévinas's concept of alterity provides a clear standard that clarifies the aim of liberal education: to free human beings from prejudice and preconception. The alterity of other human beings that students encounter in class highlights the risks of an educational approach that focuses only on individualized “learning,” as this approach fundamentally blocks the inherent risk presented by alterity. This paper critically discusses Biesta's application of Lévinas's ethics of the Other to education to analyze the ethical meaning of teaching and its implications for classroom practice.
